Back to Basics

Sandra Stahl of PR Week recently examined the basics of public relations. In her article “The Five Qualities that Define PR Today“, Stahl identified critical elements of modern public relations practices.

Stahl suggests the key to successful public relations lies in the impact of the messages being delivered. Regardless of the channel, she asks, “does what we’ve created or written, staged, or disseminated reflect an understanding of our audience, and have we translated that into communications that tells the audience something new and worthwhile and, therefore, enhanced their daily lives?”

Equally as important, she suggests transparency, content versus volume, invitation not imposition, and context as the remaining four public relations necessities.

Her message reminds me that, despite our greatest efforts, unless and until our audience receives our message and acts upon it in some capacity (albeit awareness, acceptance or action), our efforts are fruitless.
